FRONT AND CENTER

The World Is Upside Down

The fanaticism that people display about their favorite sports teams has always been a mystery to me. Yes, I believe it is good to get excited when a team we have an emotional attachment to is playing well or winning. My wife and I have followed our granddaughters' softball teams each Spring for several years now, and we can scream as loudly as the next when the girls do a good job or their team is winning. In fact, our little business has even bought shirts for the girls to show our support.

There is a lot to be learned about teamwork, determination, fair play, and just plain fun when it comes to team sports. However, a recent event in the sports world has left me scratching my head and wondering if we've all gone mad in the wrong sort of way. As I have observed the controversy surrounding the return of Michael Vick to professional football after spending time in prison for his involvement in brutal dog fighting events that have left creatures hurting and dead, I've wondered to myself, "Where is the outrage about the killing of innocent pre-born humans?"

Now, I love animals. We've had dogs and cats for decades. Even as I write this piece, there are two wonderful little Pomeranians asleep on the couch next to me at my computer. But when I see the little response to the planned murder of more than 55 million pre-born children in our world, I have to say that our world is severely out of whack. How much better would it be for us to recognize the value and possible lifetime contributions of those who are aborted each year? These are precious lives we're talking about with hearts and souls and minds. When will we return to the moral standards that view all human life as sacred? I pray that it will be soon.

The tragedy of the cruelty inflicted on animals such as that perpetrated by Michael Vick is bad, no question. However, the tragedy inflicted upon millions of pre-born children, in my view and I believe in God's, is much worse.
