FRONT AND CENTER

Some days it seems like the bad news just keeps coming. The television presents stories according to the philosophy, "If it bleeds, it leads." Politicians want to blame everyone except themselves for all of society's ills, and even the weather makes it tough to keep a positive attitude. The dark of the winter and the lack of sunlight even make people more surly that usual. It's easy to get discouraged in the wintertime—especially here in the Northeast.

Perspective is something that is easy to lose and sometimes hard to regain, particularly when our lives seem mired in the nasty here and now. Isn't it great to know there is a place where the sun is always shining? Yes, I'm talking about heaven—the dwelling place of God where the Christian will ultimately go to reside forever. However, even in the darkest winter, all you have to do is get a small taste of His celestial glory to be encouraged!

A friend of mine has been a pilot for a long time. Standing and talking next to his plane one day when the clouds looked ominous, he said something that stayed with me. He said, "I know a place not far from here where the sun is shining." Knowing that the clouds had us thoroughly covered, I asked, "Where is that?" His response, "Just take a plane ride and get above the clouds! The sun is always shining just a few thousand feet up." May we always keep that optimistic perspective.
