The events of the past months with gasoline and food prices shooting up, hurricanes, and the financial meltdown of huge bastions of capitalism have caused many to be fearful for the future of our country and our way of life. Christians involved in helping others should look at the working out of God's will in our world as a source of opportunities rather than of discouragement.
The Apostle Paul used his current circumstances (poor, not so poor, free, in jail) to occasion the preaching of the Gospel. Yes, when other people look only at the horizontal in this world, we must always remember the vertical. Our relationship with the Lord needs to be cultivated for more strength as we lean on Him. We should take advantage of circumstances to show those we serve the sinfulness of man, the love of God, the compassion of Christ, and the salvation that comes from calling on His name.
When conditions worsen, the colossal cosmic battle of good vs. evil shows people at their worst, but this shows God at His very best as He gives hope to all who will call on His name! And that includes all of us who name Him as our heavenly Father. To paraphrase a verse I love, "To live is Christ; to die is gain, but to stick around for the folks God wants us to bring to Himself is what we have to do!"
